Travel Insurance: Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance protects against unexpected expenses due to travel mishaps, illnesses or accidents outside your home province. From the expense of rebooking your flight to creature comforts during delays and even massive medical bills, travel insurance is there to keep you financially safe.

  2. I have Nova Scotia provincial health care, do I need travel insurance?

The healthcare coverage provided by your province is quite limited when it comes to supporting you outside the province. Typically, you would only receive reimbursement for a small fraction of the cost of even a brief doctor’s visit in the USA or most other countries.

  3. What is a pre-existing medical condition?

A pre-existing medical condition refers to any diagnosis, illness, or medical condition that you have prior to embarking on a trip. Travel insurance policies typically do not cover these conditions unless the individual is stable. However, with Xodus’ policies, you do not have to worry about stability periods. This is because Xodus has a personalized process where you declare all of your pre-existing medical conditions.

  4. Who is eligible for travel insurance and when can you buy it?

You’re eligible for travel insurance coverage if you’re a resident of Canada at least 30 days of age and covered under a government health insurance plan. You can purchase no more than 60 days before your departure date, and right up to the moment you leave your province or territory of residence.

If you wish to extend your coverage while at your destination, make sure to buy the additional coverage before your current policy expires.

  5. Do I have to add my child who just got their beginner license?

A driver who still has a Beginners or Learner’s license does not need to be listed on a car insurance policy until they have passed their road test and obtained their full License.

As long as they have their Learner’s License they need to have an experienced operator in the vehicle with them at all times so they do not need to be listed on the policy. Once they pass their road test, and get their drivers license, they need to be added to your policy.

  6. Are travel insurance policies tax deductible?

The medical component of travel insurance policies can be tax-deductible. Xodus provides a tax receipt for your records.

  7. What is family travel insurance coverage?

When travelling with your family, a family coverage policy can simplify things. These policies can cover up to 10 children along with parents or guardians.

  8. I have an annual travel insurance plan, can I stay longer than the days I purchased?

We refer to these as top-ups. Essentially, you can purchase an additional policy that will start after your annual policy expires. This allows for seamless coverage during your longer trips, giving you peace of mind.

  9. What is a travel insurance deductible?

Travel Insurance deductibles are the amount you pay before your insurance responds. Larger deductibles provide larger discounts.

  10. Who is NOT eligible for travel insurance coverage?

The following individuals are not eligible for travel insurance coverage:

    • You are travelling against the advice of a physician.
    • You’ve been diagnosed with a terminal or metastatic cancer, or you require kidney dialysis.
    • You are awaiting investigative testing – excluding genetic tests – the test results, or the beginning of
      treatment for an unresolved condition.
    • You have been prescribed or used home oxygen during the 12 months prior to application.
    • You have had a bone marrow, stem cell or organ transplant – except a corneal transplant
